Annapolis Running Report

Annapolis TriClub:- Planning for the 2008 Annapolis Triathlon will begin in earnest in a couple of weeks. The date is currently looking like sometime in September. If you are interested in being part of planning this major event, let us knowhttp://www.triannapolis.org/

- Expanded club merchandise is planned for 2008, to be accessible/ordered from our web site.

-The Social Committee, is in the process of organizing events for the club members and families to get together and have fun outside of training and racing activities.  In other words we are sick and tired of seeing all the club members in their spandex and other training outfits.  Some of the events currently being organized are monthly T-3 at different local establishments; a beginning of the year kick-off party and year end get together; and a family fun event at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.  In addition to providing an opportunity for members to come together on a purely social level the hope would be to utilize some of these events to give back to the local community.  If you have some ideas for an event this year or you would like to help out with the social community feel free to contact Kevin Mish at kjmish@gmail.com.

Winter Riding
For the hardy, there's still plenty of good riding out there. But you need to be careful. Watch out for leaves – they're slippery when wet, and they can hide a pothole or some ice. Other things to watch are shady areas, bridges, and corners. Shady areas can hide ice, and corners become doubly dangerous if there are any wet leaves or ice. And those signs that say that 'Bridge freezes before the rest of the road' aren't kidding. Many of us have found that out the hard way! If you have to brake, brake with the rear wheel only – if your front wheel locks up, you'll lose your ability to steer, and that's usually spells a fall. For more good information on winter riding, see www.icebike.com.

Do you know any non-runners, or beginning runners, who would like to become more active, increase their energy level and boost their self-confidence?  Fleet Feet Sports Annapolis is offering "No Boundaries", an 11-week training program for beginners hoping to run or walk their first 5K race.  The purpose of the program is to introduce participants to the lifetime fitness activities of running and walking and to encourage them to live healthier lifestyles. We are very excited to debut our first beginners program in store with our vendor partner New Balance. The program has been run successfully with a few other stores nationally and the response has been overwhelming. On a daily basis we get requests from our customers to be a part of an all paces program. The beauty of NO BOUNDARIES™ is the tiered approach to the training. No Boundaries will offer participants guidance and advice from experienced coaches, weekly group training runs or walks, and educational clinics on topics such as proper nutrition, choosing the right gear, and avoiding injury, all within a fun and supportive environment.  The program will culminate with the Joe Cannon 5K Run and Fun Walk at Joe Cannon Stadium at Harmans Park in Hanover , Maryland , a goal which participants will work towards throughout the program.  New Balance is sponsoring the program along with Fleet Feet Sports Annapolis, and will provide each participant with a moisture-wicking shirt and hat.  A $75 registration fee will cover all aspects of the program. No Boundaries will begin on Monday, January 14, 2008 and the group will meet every Monday and Wednesday evening for 11 weeks.  An informational session will be held at Fleet Feet Sports Annapolis on Monday, January 07, 2008 at 7pm. Here is what you will receive for the 11 week program:

· Complete training schedule with a goal race at the completion of the program

· Coach supported group runs 2 days per week

· New Balance technical shirt, hat, shoe bag, socks and water bottle

· 50 PR Rewards points at Fleet Feet Sports

Text Box: RUNNING HUMOR:
1.      You can say “fartlek” and “yassos” without giggling. Wait. That’s almost impossible. If you’ve ever done one of those two workouts, that counts.
2.      You can convert kilometers to miles or vice versa. Sometimes, you can even do that while running.
3.      You know exactly how many miles there are in a marathon.
4.      You have had at least one toe nail become purple or black, and it wasn’t because you were wearing the hottest toenail polish color.
5.      Two words: bloody nipples.
6.      Two more words: weiner bite.
7.      You proudly don your reflective vest and headlamp in order to run in the dark. You refuse to believe that you look dorky. You look like a safe runner.
8.      You can discuss bodily fluids and gastrointestinal issues without flinching. Thinking “ewwww” never crosses your mind. Usually, you are thinking “I hope that doesn’t happen to me” or “Ugh. I hate when that happens.”
9.      You have a vague idea that one lap around a track is equal to a quarter mile, two laps equals a half mile, etc. (Note: This does not mean that you can do math and run simultaneously, or that you will remember these handy track facts when you start your track workout.)
10.  Getting up at 6 a.m. on a Saturday morning to run for two to three hours doesn’t sound like an outlandish, cruel punishment. Instead, it sounds like the perfect way to start your weekend.

“There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things....but nothing is more thrilling.” Niccolo Machiavelli

Learn to Train More Efficiently - December 17

Greetings Runners,  For eight years I collected items I thought was of interest to the local running community; local race information, accomplishments, and anecdotes from the Annapolis running “family,” and provided them to you as “Strider Stuff.”  I would like to continue providing that service in an expanded, less restrictive venue.  This is the first of those e-newsletters.  As always, your input is what makes this complete.  It will not necessarily be sent every week but when enough content is available to warrant taking up your time to read.  I will also be as timely as possible with upcoming races and results.  I am considering including a ‘Local Runner Highlight’ or an ‘Upcoming Training Programs’; if there is interest.  Read on.
